We recommend Medicare supplements to fill in the gaps of coverage which Medicare will not cover and also to ensure greater access to health care. Some physicians will not see patients with Medicare unless they also have a supplement.
There are eleven standardized Medicare Supplement Plans, denoted as Plans A, B, C, D, F, K, L, M, N and High Deductible plan F. All companies offering Medicare supplements must offer Plan A and may offer one or more other plans. The most popular plan is Plan F. With a traditional Plan F, Medicare-eligible charges are covered in full with no deductibles or co-pays, as long as a Medicare provider is used. Some companies also offer a high-deductible Plan F, which pays in full after the deductible is met, $2,000 in 2011.
2006 saw the introduction of a new plan, Plan K. The K plan pays one-half of the hospital deductible and 10% of the Medicare approved charges.
Plan N was introduced in June 2010. This plan provides a lower cost option, In return, subscribers must pay the $162 Part B deductible and copays of $20 per doctors visit and $50 for emergency room visits.
Because Medicare supplements no longer cover prescription drugs, we recommend enrollment in Medicare Part D. Part D is offered through private insurance companies.
