California Major Risk Medical Insurance Program (MRMIP) started in 1991, promising to insure anyone who has been declined for health insurance in the last twelve months, has lost their medical coverage, such as the expiration of COBRA or losing coverage as a dependent by death, divorce, or losing full-time student status. Subsidized by the tobacco tax, this program guarantees coverage to all Californians.
| To qualify for the Major Risk Medical Insurance Program (MRMIP): | |||||||
| You must be a California resident with the intent of staying in the state of California | |||||||
| You cannot be eligible for both Medicare Part A and Part B | |||||||
| You cannot be eligible to purchase continuation of benefits under COBRA | |||||||
| You must be unable to secure adequate coverage This can be demonstrated in one of the following ways:

If you do not qualify for MRMIP, but will become eligible in the future, you may apply for a deferred enrollment under this Program. For instance, if you are currently enrolled in COBRA, you will need to show proof of anticipated termination to apply.
